Local SF Experts for Residential Heat Pump Installation

NEON installs ductless and ducted heat pumps in San Francisco homes. Before we recommend a system, we visit your home to review the space, existing equipment, ductwork, and electrical setup. We handle the project from start to finish, including:

  • System sizing
  • Equipment installation
  • Removal and haul-away of old equipment for standard replacements
  • System startup and testing
  • Required permits and inspections
  • Ductwork or electrical work, if needed

You’ll receive a clear written estimate for your heat pump installation in San Francisco before work begins. If your project needs ductwork changes, electrical upgrades, or other non-standard work, we’ll explain it upfront and include it in your proposal. NEON is a licensed California contractor (CSLB #1156494). Our technicians who handle refrigerant are EPA Section 608-certified.

What Affects Your Installation: Sizing, Panels, and Ducts

Three things shape the scope of a heat pump installation in San Francisco, CA: system size, your electrical panel, and your ductwork. We review all three during the estimate.

Right-Sizing Your System

We use a Manual J calculation to find the right system size for your home. It takes into account your home's size, insulation, windows, and air leaks. We also look at the layout, sun exposure, and local weather to make sure your system can heat and cool your home properly.

An oversized system can short-cycle, turning on and off too often. That can affect comfort and put added wear on the equipment.

Your Electrical Panel

We assess electrical capacity as part of every residential heat pump installation. Some older San Francisco homes have 100-amp electrical service, but a 100-amp panel does not automatically need an upgrade.

We evaluate your home’s electrical load and available panel capacity first. If the existing service cannot safely support the new equipment, we’ll explain the required electrical work and quote it separately after the assessment.

Your Existing Ducts

If your home already has ductwork, we check it for leaks, sizing, and insulation. Properly sized, sealed ducts in good condition can often be reused.

If ducts are undersized or damaged, we can repair, modify, or replace them. Any recommended ductwork work will be listed separately in your proposal.

How Much Does It Cost to Install a Heat Pump in San Francisco?

Our experience with Freon HVAC has been exceptional for a full panel upgrade to 200 amps and installation of a new Mitsubishi mini-split system in an old house. We took quotes from 4 different top rated hvac providers in the San Jose area, before deciding to go with Freon. I appreciated the honesty and detailed analysis of our needs by Slava when he first showed up to do an estimate. He asked a ton of questions, checked the house for existing setup, wiring, possibilities, and discussed multiple possibilities including ducted, gas, hybrid, and heat pump only. Once we decided to go with a specific type of configuration, he gave us multiple options. Their pricing was competitive and while it took forever for PGE to get to the wiring/transformer upgrade, Freon's team worked with them patiently to meet our needs. Special thanks to Jessica for regular follow ups with PGE and us. Once PGE scheduled the wiring upgrade (after 3 months), Freon's team was prompt and did a very clean install including all internal wiring and drainage work. They ensured city inspection was scheduled promptly and addressed all city concerns for a quick approval. I have not dealt with a more professional and competent crew in this area in a very long time. Would love to do business with them again.

I usually doubt perfect 5-star ratings, but Freon completely earned theirs. My AC/heater combo unit broke, and every other company told me I needed a total replacement, quoting me between $9k and $12k. Freon came out to inspect it, and later that day, they gave me a quote for just $3,000 to repair it. I signed the contract that night, and they were back to do the work just 5 days later on June 19th. The tech replaced the compressor to get it running, but didn't stop there. He thoroughly tested the system, caught a power issue, and replaced the compressor relay and expansion valve to ensure the unit wouldn't break down again. Outstanding service. I'm finally set for the summer and winter. They deserve every single star!

Answers to Your Heat Pump Installation Questions

    Frequently Asked Questions

A diagnostic visit with NEON costs $59, which goes toward the repair if you approve the work. The final price depends on the failed part, refrigerant requirements, and how easy the equipment is to access.

Heat pump lifespan depends on installation quality, usage, maintenance, and climate exposure. DOE uses about 15 years as an average lifespan in its cost calculations, but age alone does not determine when replacement is needed.

Coastal homes may see more corrosion from salt air. Contact NEON for heat pump repair in San Francisco to help assess whether repair or replacement makes sense.

Yes. We repair single-zone and multi-zone ductless mini-splits in San Francisco, including systems with airflow, electrical, control, and refrigerant problems.

We repair Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Carrier, Bosch, Trane, Rheem, Lennox, Goodman, York, and American Standard systems. Parts availability varies by brand, model, and age. If a part is no longer available, we’ll check the alternatives and explain your options.

Same-day service may be available, depending on our schedule, the problem, and the parts needed. Refrigerant work or hard-to-find parts can take longer. We’ll explain the timeline after checking your system.

If your system isn't heating your home properly, start with a few basic checks. Make sure the thermostat is set to Heat and the temperature is set higher than the current room temperature. A clogged air filter or tripped circuit breaker could also be the cause. Keep in mind that a heat pump may briefly blow cool air during a defrost cycle. That's normal. But if the heating problem persists or the breaker keeps tripping, schedule a diagnostic visit.

If your heat pump isn't cooling properly, start by checking the thermostat and air filter. Set the thermostat to Cool and make sure the temperature is below the current room temperature. A dirty filter or restricted airflow may be causing the issue. Other possible causes include refrigerant leaks, electrical problems, or faulty fans and compressors. Still getting warm air? If the problem continues or your system keeps shutting off, contact NEON for heat pump service in San Francisco.
